In 2015 Foxhill Lodge was transformed from just an old farm barn to a very amazing holiday house, even if we say so ourselves! The interiors were professionally designed and the layout given much consideration because we wanted to make the most of the glorious views; the result is unique and very welcoming group accommodation, tucked away behind the owner's house on a working farm in the beautiful Blackdown Hills, close to the Somerset and Devon borders.
5 bedrooms sleep 10 people, there's a gorgeous first floor living room, a dream of a kitchen, and a private hot tub and BBQ lodge. There's also an outdoor pool which is heated from 29th March 2024 through to 31st October 2024 and though it's shared with the owners, you can have exclusive use for an extra charge.
Once you're here, you might decide to stay put and just enjoy being miles away from the hustle and bustle of life; if you do fancy exploring a bit, you'll find plenty to see and do within just a few miles. Right on the doorstep are acres and acres of spectacular countryside at your disposal, or go and have a mooch around some of the villages, take it all in, the way of life in these parts.
In Culmstock you can go for coffee at The Strand Stores or lunch at The Culm Valley Inn before a walk to Culm Beacon where the views will astound you; at Uffculme you can have a look round Coldharbour Mill, at Dunkeswell you can visit the airfield and watch the light aircraft come and go from the Aviator Café. Head for a day out on the heather-clad moors of Exmoor National Park, see the tiny Culbone Church up on the cliffs, watch the world go by at Porlock Weir, stroll along the river at Watersmeet.
The local towns are Cullompton, Honiton and Wellington, all quite different from one another, with smaller independent shops to browse and some good places to stop by for a bite to eat. A little further is the Somerset county town of Taunton where you can visit The Museum of Somerset, play on the high ropes at Vivary Golf Course & Adventure Centre or go tenpin bowling. Exeter isn’t far; go and see the glorious cathedral, discover the medieval Underground Passages, or hire kayaks down on the Quayside for a paddle on the River Exe.
In under an hour you can be on the beaches of the Jurassic Coast; spend the day at Sidmouth or Lyme Regis where you can go to Dinosaurland Fossil Museum, play crazy golf in the town gardens or go out to sea on a mackerel fishing trip. For family days out there’s stacks of choice; within easy travelling distance are Crealy Theme Park and Resort, Wildwood Escot and National Trust houses like Killerton and Knightshayes. Go to Tiverton and enjoy a trip on the Grand Western Canal on one of the country’s few remaining horse drawn barges and round it off with a cream tea at the canal side tea gardens.
