Knightshayes, Bolham, Tiverton, Devon

Knightshayes near Tiverton in Devon is one of those family attractions where the National Trust show just how well they can do things, with something for all ages and plenty to keep you here for hours. There’s something quite magical about the Gothic Revival house, probably because of its quirkiness – the stone gargoyles, the carved dogs on the staircase, the gorgeously decorative ceilings, and the fantastical spiny beast in the library. There are family trails, you can dress up as servants, and even tinkle the ivories in the drawing room.

The gardens are equally inspiring, with formal terraces, a  walled kitchen garden and something to look out for – a topiary fox being chased by hounds. Go and stretch your legs good and proper in the wider grounds and parkland, let the young ‘uns have a barrel of fun in the Four Oaks Play Area then head off to The Conservatory Tea Room or The Stables Cafe for well earned refreshments. A rather lovely day out when you're on your big family holiday in Devon.

The grounds at Knighthayes are open every day except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day; opening times for the house and cafe vary throughout the year.
