Tiverton Canal Co, Tiverton, Devon

Tiverton Canal Co is what you’d call a heritage attraction; it makes for a very unique day out, and a jolly relaxing one. Climb on board one of the few remaining horse drawn barges in the country, find a seat and then all you have to do is sit back and relax as the boat drifts slowly along the Grand Western Canal in Devon. The scenery is wonderful and it’s all rather magical, with willows dipping their boughs into the water from the bank, swans soundlessly gliding by, ducks dabbling and moorhens scooting. You might even be lucky enough to catch the turquoise flash of a kingfisher, or hear the plop of water vole slipping into the water.

Meet the hefty shire horses that pull the boat, hire rowing boats or Canadian canoes and test your paddle power, take a stroll or a bike ride along the 11 mile towpath. Back at the Wharf have refreshments on board Ducks Ditty Cafe Bar or tuck into a cream tea in the Canal Tea Rooms and Gardens. It’s all so lovely, and what’s nice is that you can really feel the pace of life slow down. If there’s a big group of you fancying a boat trip you’d be wise to book your seats.
