The Ship Inn, Porlock Weir, Minehead, Somerset
Otherwise known as The Bottom Ship (The Top Ship is in Porlock up the hill), the Ship Inn at Porlock Weir is at first glance, like something that might feature on a postcard or an old fashioned box of chocolates; white washed walls, a heavy thatched roof, tall chimneys and the backdrop of a steeply climbing Exmoor hillside. As you can imagine, this is a place that draws the crowds, especially in summer when people flock to Porlock Weir on their Exmoor explorations.
Inside is probably what you’d expect – traditional, with low ceilings, beams, thick stone walls and in winter, a crackling log fire. Food is pub classics with the addition of dishes like Hunters Chicken, Fillet of Seabass and Halloumi Burger. Of course, it’s a delight on a warm summery day but it’s just as good in the thick of winter, when Exmoor is shrouded in a dense mizzle, when you’ve been for a good walk on the hills and all you want is the fireside, hot food and a good pint of ale. You’ll certainly get that here.
