Porlock, Minehead, Somerset

Porlock is on everyone’s list of places to see when they explore Exmoor National Park, and that comes as no surprise because this peaceful village a stone’s throw from the coast is just so charming. The streets wind along, lined with characterful cottages, locally owned shops, galleries, pubs and tea rooms. The backdrop are the steep wooded hills of Exmoor and the sea, the sea.

Park up, have a leisurely amble round and then go and have a bite to eat – for a proper job cream tea go to Whortleberry Tearoom (the cakes in the window are plenty enough to tempt you in), or for homemade pub fare go to The Ship Inn, one of the oldest pubs on Exmoor.

What next? Pootle down to Porlock Weir to sit on the harbour and watch the world go by, or head up through the cliffs for a walk to Culbone Church – the smallest parish church in England.
