The Ship Inn, Porlock, Minehead, Somerset

The Ship Inn, in the picturesque village of Porlock is known locally as The Top Ship – The Bottom Ship, as they call it, is down the hill at Porlock Weir. If you’re staying at one of our luxury holiday houses for groups in Devon and you decide to spend a day discovering Exmoor National Park, you’ll probably wind your way to Porlock; it’s on most people’s list of things to see and that’s understandable because it’s so quaint with streets lined with charming old buildings, and a backdrop of steep wooded slopes and the sea. It’s a place where the pace of life drops down a gear or two, the air is peaceful and friendly, no one here is in a hurry.

So, amble round the little shops and then go and have lunch at The Ship Inn. This historic coaching inn dates back to the 13th century and stands on the main street through the village. Outside is bumpy whitewashed walls, a thatched roof and sash windows; in the summer hanging baskets adorn the front of the pub, brimming with colourful flowers. Inside is country inn charm, with a wood-burner adding to the cosiness in the colder months.

The bar is well stocked with West Country ales and local ciders, food is mostly pub favourites with the addition of a few contemporary dishes. On the lunch menu are baguettes, jacket potatoes and Ploughman’s, or for something more substantial, the likes of Venison meatballs, Homemade burger and Jackfruit Burrito bowl.  Dinner time sees the addition of restaurant classics – for example, Sage and onion stuffed beef, Pan fried duck breast and Ratatouille stuffed aubergine.
