Whortleberry Tearoom, Porlock, Minehead, Somerset

You won’t have any trouble finding Whortleberry Tearoom – it’s right on the main street in the idyllic Exmoor village of Porlock; in the window a display of homemade cakes is plenty enough to tempt you in. They serve late breakfasts, light lunches, traditional cream teas and cakes, cakes and more cakes, all of it home made using ingredients from the local area as much as they can, like the excellent strawberry or wortleberry jam that goes down a treat with the freshly baked scones and a gurt dollop of clotted cream. Sit inside and tuck in, or out in the little courtyard in the sunshine.

So what are they, wortleberries? Worts, as they are known in these parts grow on the Exmoor hills and for centuries the local folk have gone out and gathered them every year. Back in the day, when Wortleberry tearoom was a fruit and veg shop, the owner paid the locals for the berries they’d picked; they were sent to London to be used in the food trade, or used as a dye for RAF uniforms.
