When it comes to luxury family holidays in Devon, Lower Leigh Farmhouse & The Dairy Lower Leigh are a very special place to stay. If you’re a well seasoned traveller you may have stayed in classic English cottages, historic houses, rural retreats in Ireland or Wales, in French chateaux and gorgeous Italian villas. This somehow captures all the best elements of such places and brings them gently together, it’s like the house softly beckons you in and any tension falls away from your shoulders. This is where you can rest and relax with your loved ones, where the pace of life slows down; these are times you will always remember.

The thing is, Lower Leigh Farmhouse & The Dairy Lower Leigh are not just a hidden treasure, there’s something quite enchanting here, it’s almost as if you’ve stepped into another world, one that’s entirely yours, a universe away from the hustle and bustle of life. Wander around The Farmhouse, old and thatched and full of surprises; little steps take you to different levels, there are low beamed ceilings, exposed stonework, bumpy old walls and from every window, such charming views of the gardens.

And the gardens, that’s another thing. Not your average garden by any means – 3 acres of grounds with high walls and tall hedges, a walnut tree and an orchard where sheep happily graze beneath the apple trees. In the spring it’s a mass of sweet scented blossom, in early autumn the boughs are heavy with fruit. Stroll around, stop for a quiet chat in the little thatched hideaway, a welcome retreat from the blazing sun in the height of summer. Go through the arched gate in the wall, amble down the lane to the ford and have a paddle.

Get together on the patio for family barbecues, idle the time away beneath cotton wool clouds, birds chirruping all the while; have a soak in the hot tub or a game of outdoor table tennis while your steaks are sizzling – in early 2023 it gets even better when a swim spa arrives at Lower Leigh Farmhouse & The Dairy Lower Leigh. If the skies are grey and the sun is hiding away, tiptoe off to the cosiness of the Nordic style BBQ lodge, toast marshmallows and swap stories, tell jokes, sing happy songs.

The Farmhouse sleeps 8 in 4 bedroom suites, each named aptly to reflect how the house has changed over the years; a Children’s Room sleeps 2 extra youngsters at no extra charge and downstairs there’s a games room for pre-supper pool challenges. Celebrate that notable birthday in the dining room, cook up a feast in the kitchen, watch a family film in the main lounge, read to the little ones in the snug.

The Old Dairy is just across the courtyard and has been transformed from its days as a milking parlour; all on one level this country cottage sleeps 4 in 2 bedrooms and offers the perfect answer if you’ve got people in your group who like their own space. Large group holidays are wonderful but sometimes, for some folk, it’s nice to have a moment or two of solitude.

Interiors have been professionally designed and are so in keeping with the age and the character of the house and dairy, fixtures and fittings are top notch, it’s all been done so well whether you’re here for a few days or a fortnight, it will soon feel like home. Leaving will be the hardest part…
