The Kings Arms, Otterton, Budleigh Salterton, Devon

Among the reasons to go to the pretty village of Otterton near Budleigh Salterton in Devon is to have lunch at The Kings Arms; why? Because it’s very good – a wonderful blend of the traditional and the modern, but so tastefully done and it still has a relaxed village pub feel, which is good because you have to look after your locals as well as visitors.

Inside it’s charming; low ceilings, a red brick fireplace where a wood-burner blazes away on colder days, quirky handmade tables shaped by a carpenter just along the coast in Exmouth, it’s all rather lovely. The support for local producers is evident not just in the food that’s served at The Kings Arms but also in the drinks on offer – beer from Otter Brewery, cider from Sandford Orchards, gin from Salcombe. And what’s on the menu? For lunch there’s a tempting choice of sandwiches including Lyme Bay crab, Roast beef & horseradish, and Cheddar & Devon apple & cider chutney; dinner mains list dishes like Seafood linguine, Greendale traditional Olde English sausage & mash, and Thai vegetable & coconut curry.

If it’s warm out you can sit on one of the terraces to either side of the pub, or out the back where there’s a children’s play area. There’s plenty of parking and even somewhere to tether your horses should you choose to arrive by such method of transport.
