Mason’s Arms, Branscombe, Devon

On the hill that slopes gently down to the sea at Branscombe is the Mason’s Arms, a 14th century village pub that’s bursting with charm inside and out; whitewashed walls, ceiling beams and exposed centuries old timbers. When the sun is high in the sky you can sit out on the terrace beneath the parasols and sip a long cool pint of local beer or an ice cold glass of wine; it’s a good spot to just watch the world go by, people ambling to and fro from the beach or the old working forge, folk with backpacks and walking boots off for a hike on the South West Coast Path that runs along behind the church. When it’s not so clement cosy up indoors with a roaring log fire to keep you warm, join in the chitchat, soak up the relaxed ambience.

The Mason’s Arms has a brilliant reputation for food so people come from near and far to eat here. The menu is seasonal pub fare with a contemporary twist; as you’d expect there’s a lot of fresh fish - Pan fried supreme of hake, Locally sourced steamed mussels, or Catch of the Day. If the fruits of the sea aren’t your thing opt for a 6oz hand pressed burger, a West Country 8oz sirloin steak, or Chef’s pie of the day. What’s not to like?
