Branscombe Forge, Branscombe, Devon

Blacksmiths have been working at Branscombe Forge for over 400 years and it has the accolade of being the oldest thatched working forge in the country. It’s currently run by a third generation blacksmith and owned by the National Trust who have retained the essential charm of the building; big thick stone walls, that low thatch and at the front, the open shelter where folk tethered their horses to be shod.

Back in the day they made whatever was in demand from the local farmers and fishermen – things like axe heads, pig rings, fishing hooks and all the bits and pieces that were needed for the agricultural machinery that was used to work the fields in and around the village. These days the line is more candleholders, garden ornaments, door furniture, chandeliers and fireside companion sets, all of which are on display and for sale in the showroom. Watching the blacksmith at his art is fascinating, one of those old trades that survive from times of yore. Well worth a visit when you’re in Branscombe on your large group holiday in Devon.
