Kentisbeare, Cullompton, Devon

Kentisbeare is quite a pretty little village in the Culm Valley on the edge of the Blackdown Hills AONB; the streets are of charming old cottages (mostly), the backdrop one of rolling green hills and wide open fields, so there are good walks in and around the parish. Like most villages in these parts of Devon, not a lot goes on but there’s a lot of community spirit in Kentisbeare – so much so that a group of them all rallied together and saved the pub, The Wyndham Arms from closure.

Here’s a gruesome bit of history about Kentisbeare: a young girl called Betty Limpney who worked as a maid was hung at Exeter in 1799 for burning down her master’s house in Kentisbeare.
