Dunkeswell Abbey, Dunkeswell, Honiton, Devon
There’s not much left of Dunkeswell Abbey at all but it’s amazing the sense of tranquility that still pervades where it stood in all it’s glory, before the Dissolution. Go and see, if history is your bag, stand there and try to imagine how wondrous it must have been back in the day for this 13th century Cistercian monastery – there are information boards to help you.
What makes it even more enchanting here is the backdrop of beautiful countryside in this part of the Blackdown Hills, and the way you follow a short path between clipped yew hedges to the abbey ruins and the church set within a walled graveyard with the open fields beyond. Go for a little stroll whilst you’re here then head up to Dunkeswell Airfield for tea and cake in The Aviator Coffee Bar & Restaurant.
