Double Locks, Exeter, Devon

Because it’s on the waterside of the Exeter Ship Canal, the Double Locks is a popular place; there’s something very nice about sitting at the water’s edge amongst good company, with good food and drink before you, especially if it’s one of those glorious summer days when the air feels fresh and clear and all is well.

How you get to the Double locks is up to you; people rock up by car or bike, on foot, and even in kayaks and canoes that they’ve hired from Saddles and Paddles on the Quayside in Exeter; others come by boat with Exeter Cruises, which sounds lovely – a leisurely trip along the calm waters to the pub, time for lunch and then head back the same way.

However you get there what you’ll find is a friendly pub that serves decent beer and home cooked freshly prepared food from a menu that changes with the seasons so it makes the most of the abundance of local produce to be found in this part of Devon. It’s pub grub but there’s nothing wrong with that, especially not when it’s done this well; choose from classics like Fish and chips, Sausage and mash, Steak and ale pie and their very popular Double Locks burger. If you come on the Bank Holiday at the end of August you can join in all the fun of the Cider & sausage Festival which draws a happy crowd.
