Cullompton Town Trail, Cullompton, Devon

Discover the rich and fascinating history of this mid Devon town on the Cullompton Town Trail; Cullompton isn’t a very big place so this won’t take you more than an hour or so and when you’re done you can go for coffee and cake, or if the timing is right, for lunch at The Bakehouse.

Where better to start than the Town Hall, once the known as The Bull Ring because it’s where the cattle market used to be held. The trail takes you past several historic buildings, some appear to be built at odd angles and lean slightly to one side or into the street, but that’s all part of the charm of these old towns. Carry on along the mill leat, up the hill and back down past the Roman Catholic Church which stands out because it looks distinctly Spanish and that’s not something you see very often round these parts. You’ll find out about the fire that nearly destroyed the whole town in 1839, the impressive church of St Andrew, and Walrond’s and the Manor House, which were both built in Tudor times.

Of course, not everyone is interested in history and heritage, but our point is that every place has a story and sometimes if you scratch beneath the surface it’s interesting what you can find out.
