The Fountain Head, Branscombe, Devon

If you spend time in Branscombe when you’re on your large group holiday in Devon you’ll soon notice what an idyllic place this is; stop for a bite to eat at The Fountain Head and the essence of yesteryear makes you feel so relaxed. There’s no TV, no juke box, no pool table – in fact, it’s not changed much in years so it’s a real treat in these frenetic times.

Rustic charm just seems to ooze out of the thick stone walls of The Fountain Head, but then it’s over 500 years old, so it’s to be expected in a way. It’s refreshing to find a place like this, one that hasn’t been given a contemporary make over; the old slate floors are still there, the low ceiling beams, and the open fireplace where a roaring log fire keeps you warm on colder days. It’s somewhere to settle down and play dominoes or cribbage, somewhere to put the world to rights over a plate of hearty homemade food.

At lunchtimes they do things like sandwiches, Ploughman’s and all the pub classics – Fresh fish of the day, Ham, egg and chips, Bangers and mash. Then in the evening it gets a bit more fancy with the likes of Homemade venison, vegetable and red wine pie, Roast breast of chicken with ratatouille, and Roasted, marinated artichoke hearts and red peppers. Book for a Sunday and you can tuck into a jolly good roast with all the trimmings.
