The Downs, Bristol, Somerset

If you feel the need to escape the crowds when you’re having a day out in Bristol, head for The Downs, one of the city’s green spaces just north of Clifton Village. The Downs cover 442 acres in total and are made up of Clifton Down and Durdham Down, separated by one of Bristol’s main arterial roads.

There’s always something going on up on The Downs; there are events held throughout the year including outdoor cinema and festivals, and it’s a popular spot for sports and recreation with a league football pitch and six outdoor exercise stations. Apart from that there’s a vast area to run about and explore as you wish, and because it’s a Site of Nature Conservation Interest you’d be advised to keep an eye out for wildlife; you never know what you might see.

What you can’t miss are the stunning views over the city and the Avon Gorge, including of course Brunel’s famous Clifton Suspension Bridge; hang around until dusk for the illuminations and it really is quite breathtaking. Walk the Ladies Mile, stop off at one of the playgrounds so the kids can let off steam, go to the Clifton Observatory café and whilst you’re there take in the museum and the history of this fascinating place. Close by is the ‘Clifton Rock Slide’ – a short rock path worn smooth and shiny by countless Bristol bottoms over the years – one of those things that the university students have to do at the end of term.

Being so open, The Downs are a fantastic place for kite flying and are a designated Dark Sky Discovery Site, so if stargazing is your thing pick a nice clear night and it’s staggering. It’s also a good place for a walk and there are several designated trails including Seasonal Family Trails, a Tree Trail, Bird Trail and Lichen Trail, so take your pick.
