Rougemont Gardens, Exeter, Devon

If you’re planning a trip to Exeter when you’re staying at your big holiday house in Devon, factor in a trip to the RAM Museum and afterwards, a stroll around Rougemont Gardens right next door, particularly if you’ve got children with you, because they’ll love the collections on display in the museum, and a run around in the gardens will let off any excess steam.

Rougemont Gardens is on the site of the old bank and moat of Exeter Castle, which stood in the times of William the Conqueror; the gatehouse you can see is the oldest in the country, dating from 1068. The backdrop to the various trees, shrubs and flowers that grow here is in part, the original Roman city walls, so you see, there’s an awful lot of history here.

Until 1912 this was all part of a private garden, but now this quiet green space offers a wonderful place to take five from the hustle and bustle of the city streets. You could always take a picnic too.
