Otterton Mill, Otterton, Budleigh Salterton, Devon

If you should go out exploring the beautiful Jurassic Coast when you’re on your group holidays in Devon, here’s a place you should visit. This lovely old mill is on the banks of the River Otter in the peaceful village of Otterton and there’s plenty going on here with local arts and crafts to browse, gifts and homewares, an award winning café and the opportunity to see millers at work making stoneground flour – just as they’ve done for over 1,000 years.

Have a good wander round, clamber up the creaky wooden stairs to see the exhibitions on the top floor, find a table in the café or on sunny days, out in the courtyard and tuck into a light lunch, scrumptious homemade cakes, or a delicious Devon cream tea, all made using local ingredients and cooked in-house. Have a stroll along the river looking out for the wildlife that frequents these parts; there are swans and herons and if you’re very lucky you might even glimpse the blue-green dart of a kingfisher or one of the elusive beavers that have made their home on the river banks. Join the South West Coast Path for a bracing walk along the clifftops, or if you’ve got your bikes with you, head off on one of the trails to explore further or pedal your way to Budleigh Salterton and spend time on the beach.

One thing you’ll notice at Otterton Mill is that people like to linger; it’s that kind of place, relaxed and friendly and if you come in the summer when there’s live music the atmosphere is great. Shiny happy people enjoying themselves; what’s not to like?
