Hurlstone Point, Porlock, Exmoor, Somerset

Hurlstone Point is a huge rocky promontory within Exmoor National Park on the North Somerset Coast between Porlock Weir and Minehead; it’s part of the South West Coast Path and is steep with sheer sides so perhaps not for the faint hearted. If you’re the adventurous sort and don’t mind the walk, it’s well worth it for the astonishing views across the Bristol Channel to Wales.

Standing on the side of the craggy cliff there’s an abandoned lookout tower that was manned until after the Second World War; deep down at the base of Hurlstone point there is rumoured to be a smugglers cave where contraband goods were once brought in. Fascinating, and something to think about when you’re standing there at the summit admiring those spectacular coastal views.

Sensible shoes are an absolute must and you’d be wise to pack a jacket because the winds don’t half blow up this high. Advice is not to attempt the walk in bad weather – instead, head down to Selworthy or Bossington for homemade cake in the tea rooms.
