Fairlynch Museum, Budleigh Salterton, Devon
If you decide to visit Budleigh Salterton when you’re staying at one of our luxury large group holiday houses in Devon, you might like to have a look around Fairlynch Museum – even if you’re not that into history and old things, it’s worth seeing for its charm alone. The building is a lovely old Georgian cottage with white washed walls, ornate windows and a heavy thatched roof. It was built by a ship owner who added the quirky thatched turret so that he could see his boats in the bay.
There are some fascinating collections at Fairlynch Museum, despite how small it is; delve into the local history, the geological discoveries from this part of Devon, over 500 teddy bears and toys dating from the 19th century, and a display of nationally important costumes. Sir Walter Raleigh was born just up the road in 1552 so there’s a whole room dedicated to him and his voyages, and there’s even a Smuggler’s Cellar. Before you go, have a little stroll around the Regency style gardens
