Culmhead, Taunton, Somerset

Close to the Devon border, Culmhead is a very peaceful village of mostly older houses and cottages in the Blackdown Hills, which is An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so as you can well imagine, the scenery is glorious and the views breathtaking.

Perhaps what Culmhead is best known for is the former Royal Air Force Station that closed in 1946 and in its time was occupied by Polish, Czech and Naval Air squadrons. Post-war the airfield was used as a research station for GCHQ; these days it’s an industrial estate although the old control towers are still standing and though derelict, are Scheduled Ancient Monuments.

There’s a very good pub at Culmhead, The Holman Clavel, which has been there since the 1500s and is just how country pubs should be – rustic, unpretentious and friendly.
