The Holman Clavel, Culmhead, Taunton, Somerset
Lots of pubs in Somerset have been given quite a facelift these days; they look very nice but sometimes it’s good to stumble across what we think of as a proper job country pub – like The Holman Clavel. Full of charm inside and out, this is a place with plenty of rustic character; the ambience is incredibly relaxed and the staff are a friendly bunch, but what really stands out is the unpretentiousness – dogs are welcome and wellington boots are pretty normal footwear here.
Don’t think that means the food is mediocre though because it isn’t, it’s good. It’s home cooked using ingredients from as near to home as possible and put to good use in dishes like Pork belly with roast potatoes, green veg and cider sauce, Lamb rack, minted mash & rosemary jus, and for the non-carnivorous among us, Courgette & Aubergine Korma. Alongside you’ll find pub favourites like fish and chips, burgers and bangers and mash; the best thing to wash it down with is a pint of the local brew, it would kind of be wrong not to.
They have a lot of live music at the Holman Clavel, in the summer months, out in the beer garden. Go and do a bit of foot stomping, enjoy yourselves whilst you’re down here on your large group holiday, make like a local.
