Colyford Goose Fayre, Colyford, Seaton, Devon

Colyford Goose Fayre is held in the small Devon village of Colyford near Seaton on the last Saturday in September each year and has its origins deep in the 12th century, which explains why all the villagers don medieval garb and come out into the streets in their throngs. The day kicks off with a procession through the village led by the Mayor and his Lady; one they reach the field where the fayre is held there is all kinds of shenanigans going on, all aptly themed of course, like jousting and archery and the greasy pole. There are strolling dancers and minstrels to entertain you and you can even see craftsmen at age old skills like thatching and bodging. It’s all rather fun really, everyone gets into the spirit of things, there are tents selling refreshments, people stop and natter, it’s slightly crazy in the loveliest possible way. The day culminates in a traditional Mummer’s play and a mock goose auction. Look them up.
