Birdcage Walk, Bristol, Somerset

Birdcage Walk in Clifton Village is a walkway through the churchyard of St Andrews Church which was destroyed in a night time raid on Bristol in WWII. There’s something very enchanting about Birdcage Walk; the churchyard isn’t very well maintained at all; ivy has long claimed many of the tombstones, though some, if you watch where you’re treading and take the time to read the inscriptions, reveal intriguing history. It’s nice just to amble along the walkway and see the tombs and monuments among the bushes, some sinking into the ground. All very Victorian-Gothicky; imagine the fog coming down and you’ve just the right setting for a ghost story.

The path wasn’t always known as Birdcage Walk, that name probably came about because of the metal arches that cover the walkway, giving the impression of a birdcage. The best time of year to see it is in the spring or summer when the lime trees are in full leaf on the arches and the cherry blossom is in bloom.
