The Ship Inn, Axmouth, Devon

The Ship Inn is a family run restaurant and pub in the pretty village of Axmouth on the Axe estuary. They pride themselves on serving a varied menu with dishes made using locally sourced meats, fish caught just down the road on the Jurassic Coast, hand picked crabs from Beer, and vegetables grown in the fields nearby. All good.

What’s really nice is to come here early in the evening in summer and to sit out in the beer garden at the back where the view is of the calm waters of the estuary; you know that wonderful coastal village atmosphere when peoples’ voices carry on the air and it feels so perfect and still? Not just that, they do a Black Rock Grill and Wood fired pizzas out there when the weather warms up – the former serving up the juiciest 28 day matured steaks, lamp rump, scallops and tiger prawns, and the latter – well, that speaks for itself; authentic wood fired pizzas with a choice of toppings. Also on the menu are pub classics like Beer battered cod, chips and peas, and Ham, egg & chips, and more creative choices like Griddled goats cheese with beetroot and baked apple, Pan fried Lyme Bay scallops in garlic, and Slow roasted belly pork with mash and gravy.

Inside a lot of the character has been stripped away with modern décor and furnishings, which might not be quite what you expect from a village pub in Devon, but don’t let that put you off because the atmosphere is good, the food is tasty and the people who run The Ship Inn are very welcoming.
