The Pig at Combe, Gittisham, Honiton, Devon

The setting for The Pig at Combe is lush -a beautiful Elizabethan manor with the backdrop of the glorious countryside of the Otter Valley. The mellow honey coloured stone, the creepers clambering lazily up the walls, it’s adorable. Inside is just as enticing in The Restaurant with wood panelling, a decorative plasterwork ceiling and huge windows. Tucked away in the garden there’s a rustic Folly with floor to ceiling windows, stripped back walls, reclaimed furniture and a flagstone terrace.

The food is wonderful, of course, with a big focus on local produce; vegetables and herbs are grown in the 3 walled gardens, fresh fish comes in from the coast just 8 miles away, meat is from butchers in the towns close by, game from the local estates. On the 25 Mile Menu in the Restaurant are mains including Tom Lockwood’s ‘Durac Cross’ pork chop with roast heirloom beetroot & mustard sauce, Roasted ‘crown Prince’ Squash with Red Fox Peas & pickled cauliflower, and Fillets of ‘Silver Dawn’ lemon sole with Combe gherkins, capers & rainbow chard.

Light bites and ice cream are served in the Folly, along with wood fired flatbreads with a choice of toppings, among them are Homemade Bratwurst sausage and pickled red onion, and Lavastock Mozzarella, tomato sauce and garden herbs. If there’s a few of you, you can book The Folly, The Georgian Kitchen or in the original wine vaults, The Cellar for private dining.
