The Passage House Inn, Topsham, Devon

The Passage House Inn has a wonderful setting right on the quay at Topsham with stunning views over the peaceful waters of the Exe estuary. The atmosphere is equally good in summer when it’s bustling, and in the winter when it’s quieter and a notable kind of cosiness steps in. There’s been a pub here since 1721 and it’s easy to imagine some of the old seadogs who must have stopped off here, pulling up a chair beside the fire to enjoy a beer.

Food is pub favourites brough right up to date, with a few world flavours thrown in – Honey roasted ham, egg & chips, Fish of the Day, Tuna Nicoise, Moroccan vegetable tagine, and a humdinger of a seafood sharing plate. They do daily specials too, and like to use fresh seasonal ingredients from the local area, exactly how it should be.

One of the simple pleasures is to sit out on the patio slowly sipping a pint of local ale or a nice cold glass of wine and watching the sunset; it’s one of the best spots in town for it.
