The Harbour, Axmouth, Devon

The Harbour is an old thatched inn that stands on the main street through the picturesque village of Axmouth just a stone’s throw from the beautiful Axe estuary. It’s a good one to stop by for a bite to eat when you’re out exploring the Jurassic Coast on your holidays in Devon.

The atmosphere is relaxed, the staff are friendly and the food is good without any pretensions; the building is quite fascinating, with lots of little nooks and crannies and in the winter, a blazing log fire. On Christmas Eve the old tradition of burning the ashen faggot brings much cheer – a huge faggot in a bundle of hazel twigs 6ft long and 3ft wide is placed on the fire and as it burns everyone gathers round singing carols and raising a toast.

Anyway; on the menu are pub classics like Badger beer battered fresh cod, chunky chips, peas & tartare sauce, Hand pressed beefburger, bacon, cheese, salad in a Brioche bun, fries and slaw, and 10oz Rump steak, chunky chips, mushrooms, beef tomato, onions rings and peas. But that’s not all – you can also choose from the likes of Lamb chops, Daupinoise potatoes and seasonal vegetables, Prawn linguine in a creamy garlic sauce topped with rocket and parmesan, and Lentil Shepherd’s pie with seasonal vegetables.
