The Donkey Sanctuary, Sidmouth, Devon
The Donkey Sanctuary near Sidmouth in Devon is home to over 500 lucky donkeys who have been rescued and brought to live out their days here. And lucky them, it must be one of the best places on earth for them, snuggled in the peaceful hills of East Devon just a stone's throw from the coast; they've got their friends who they share paddocks with, and their stables, plenty to eat and lots of attention. What more could any donk want?
The Donkey Sanctuary makes for a great day out when you're on your group holiday in Devon. There's no entry fee and you can wander round as you wish, stopping to stroke the donkeys if they're not too shy; if you want to know more about them or got any questions head to the Visitor Centre. You can even adopt one and then you'll get regular updates throughout the year about how your donk's getting on; not a bad idea for a birthday or Christmas present.
There's a trail down through the woods to a wildlife area, a Field of Dreams and a quirky Hermit's Cave carved out of the rock, which is quite fascinating, so do go and see it whilst you're here. Before you go home let the kids have a hoot in the farm themed play area, pop in the shop for a souvenir, and go and treat yourselves to cake in the Kitchen Cafe.
