The Catherine Wheel, Hemyock, Devon

Just down the road from three of our luxury large group holiday houses is The Catherine Wheel in the quiet village of Hemyock. It’s quite typical of village pubs in these parts, relaxed and cosy with a warm welcome – especially in the winter when they’ve got the wood-burner going. In the summer you can take a pint of the local brew out in the garden and sip it in the sunshine.

The food is a mix of pub favourites and British classics with a few world flavours, all done very well, hence The Catherine Wheel gets good reviews these days. Local produce features big - on the menu are dishes like Slow Roast Cumin Spiced Breast of Lamb, Buttered Leek and Exmoor Blue Tart with New Potatoes and Wild Garlic Pesto, Leek & Tarragon Pie with Mash and Spring Greens and Scrumpy Battered Fish & Chips, Tartar Sauce, Peas and Lemon.

There are also temptations like Wild Boar Burger, Roast Pork & Apple Sauce Focaccia Bap and Wild Mushrooms on Toast with a Poached Duck Egg, as well as a selection of sandwiches. Even the fussiest eaters will be tempted and if you’re gluten free, no problem. The roast lamb, we’ve heard, is excellent.
