The Candlelight Inn, Bishopswood, Chard, Somerset
It’s not very often you find a country pub that strikes the perfect balance of running an award winning restaurant and serving the local community, but at The Candlelight Inn at Bishopswood they’ve done it to a T.
They are big supporters of local producers at The Candlelight and they put what they get to excellent use in the food they serve; the evening bar menu features a Cumberland hot dog with Emmental cheese, fried onions and mustard mayo, Fish of the day with new potatoes and seasonal vegetables, and for the vegetarians, Caramelised onion, leek and potato pithivier with roasted courgette, baby onion and green bean fricassee, and white onion puree. Dine in the restaurant and you could be starting with the likes of Tempura tenderstem broccoli, moving onto mains of Roast lamb rack and finishing off with Lemon Panna Cotta. They also do a corker of a Sunday roast and they have barbecue nights on Saturdays in the summer; we’d suggest getting there early enough for a cocktail and the chance to try their own artisan gin.
When it’s warm enough you can sit out in the pretty garden, when it’s chilly the atmosphere inside with the log fire going is hard to beat. Perfect for after a walk at Bishopswood Meadows or Otterhead Lakes.
