Tarr Farm Inn, Exmoor, Somerset

Tarr Farm Inn is on the way down the hill to Tarr Steps, one of the most visited places on Exmoor, so naturally, it can get rather busy here at times. But don’t let that put you off you stopping by for lunch or dinner, or even a cream tea, because the food is good and the setting is idyllic, with views of the ancient clapper bridge.

As the names suggests, this used to be a farmhouse so inside it’s traditional as you’d expect, with thick bumpy old walls, exposed ceiling beams and in the winter, wood-burners to keep you nice and toasty when it’s cold outside and the thick wet’s come down over Exmoor.

Inside you can eat in the bar or the restaurant; a peek at the bar menu reveals delights like Herb crusted fish pie, Wild boar & Apple sausages, Lightly spiced chickpea burger and Kenyan green curry. They also do wraps and childrens’ meals so it should be easy to satisfy all palates. The restaurant menu lists Roasted loin of venison, 40 day aged rib eye steak and Puy Lentil & Chestnut Mushroom Strudel. The Sunday roasts are excellent, with the perfect potatoes – crispy on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside, and fresh veg, sourced locally as are most of the ingredients used in the kitchen.

What’s really nice is to sit in the garden on a warm day with a pint of local ale or a cream tea, the sky full of bird song and the River Barle tripping along merrily at the bottom of the hill.
