Seaton Wetlands, Seaton, Devon

Seaton Wetlands are made up of three Local Nature Reserves consisting of fields, marshland and reed beds along the Axe Estuary where the river flows into the sea at Seaton. The area is rich in wildlife, providing a haven to migratory and native birds. There are nearly 4km of trails and boardwalks through the marshes, making it a good place to go for a peaceful stroll or for nature studies.

On the reserve closest to Seaton there’s a Discovery Hut, a sheltered pond, bird hide and wildlife garden; events are held there throughout the year, including bird ringing demonstrations, pond dipping, Easter eggs hunts, and at Christmas, wreath making. There are a further 4 hides throughout the marshes, which along with the banks of the estuary allow for excellent birdwatching opportunities.

If you’re visiting Seaton and the Jurassic Coast when you’re on your group holidays in Devon, pack a picnic and allow a few hours to discover the wetlands. Be quiet, be still and see what you notice – the fresh air, the silence – other than the chattering of birds in the reeds, the plop of a moorhen slipping into the water, the call of ducks echoing across the waters.

The paths are mostly level and easy going for buggies, bikes and mobility scooters.
