River Exe Café, Exmouth, Devon
The River Exe Café floats on the estuary of the River Exe just off the shores of Exmouth, so it can only be reached by boat or water taxi from the marina – but that’s all part of the charm and the fun. What’s great is the unique atmosphere and the incredible views of the sea and the town – and the food of course, that’s superb.
As you’d expect there’s a lot of fish so seafood lovers are in for a treat. There’s a Specials menu that changes daily depending on what the local markets have and what the fishermen have caught. At the Mussel Bar you can try unusual dishes like Devon Cider and Smoked Bacon, Fennel and Pernod, or Thai Green Curry mussels, or stick to the Classic Moules Marineire. Mains include Steamed Dorset Clams and Smoked Fish Chowder, Cracked Whole Brixham Crab, and dishes for sharing like a Roasted Fisherman’s Platter, a Neptune Platter with lobster (when available) and a River Exe Spanish Paella Mix. If fish isn’t really your thing, there’s still plenty to choose from – how about a River Exe Café 8oz Devon Beef Burger or for the vegetarians among you, a Caribbean Butternut, Chickpea and Spinach Curry.
It’s a good all round experience at the River Exe Café, the food, the service and the ambience. You can dine out on the deck, which is an amazing thing to do on a balmy summers evening; when it’s chillier sit in the covered and heated area, or bring a warm jumper. Families are most welcome but bear in mind that groups of 12 or more must pre-order a week in advance.
