On The Waterfront, Exeter, Devon

What’s good about On The Waterfront down on Exeter’s historic Quay is that there’s an alfresco bar and a big heated and shaded terrace, so even if the weather is a bit chilly you can still sit outside and watch the comings and goings. Another plus is the excellent quality food they serve, made using local ingredients - vegetables sourced within just 15 miles of the city.

The setting is a Victorian warehouse on what would have been the docks, hence the name (it overlooks the River Exe); the two restaurants are built within the stone vaults so have a very unique atmosphere. The Boat Room has smaller tables seating up to 6 for more intimate dining, whilst The Long Room accommodates bigger groups and is often hired for special occasions.

So, lunch or dinner from a menu of tapas and sharing plates, burgers, nachos and pizzas, which On The Waterfront has a very good reputation for. Be prepared for some unusual flavours – apart from everyone’s favourites like Margherita, Hawaiian and Americana, they also do their own creations including Mama Meata (meat feast with pork meatballs, salt beef, olives, mozzarella and parmesan style cheese), Montpellier Duck (crème fraiche base with roasted duck, onions, button mushrooms, and truffle oil), and Sambal Lamb (shredded lamb with fragrant Malaysian Sambal base, onions and peppers). Pizzas, including the whopping 30 inchers, are served in wicker trays which is a nice idea.

You can of course just pop in for a pint of local ale, a craft gin or speciality coffee. If you’ve got the fam with you, no worries as this place is very family friendly.
