Nobregas, Taunton, Somerset

Nobregas is a family run Portuguese and Spanish restaurant serving tapas and paella just how they should be. The setting is a gorgeous listed building at the end of the Taunton’s historic Bath Place; it’s not a big place by any means but what’s great is that it’s totally uncommercial, the service is excellent and the atmosphere is happy and relaxed. It feels like you’re welcomed as friends, all part of the family.

The food is very good indeed which is why Nobregas gets excellent reviews. Just reading the tapas menu alone is more than enough to whet your appetite; on it are temptations like Pimentos Ao Forno (roasted bell and Padron peppers in smoked salt), Lapas (sizzling Madeiran limpets in garlic butter) and Beef croquettas (3 x pulled beef brisket and bechamel on homemade tomato sauce). If you want paella you get to choose from Chicken & Chourico, Vegetarian, King Prawn & Chourico, Nobregas Original (king prawns and chicken), and Do mar (king prawns, mussels, squid and bay octopus).

The drinks menu sticks to the Spanish and Portuguese theme with jugs of Ponch and Sangria available, so it’s an all-round authentic experience. Forget you’re in Somerset for a moment because actually, it’s easy to imagine you’re in the Algarve.
