Kitnors Tearooms, Bossington, Exmoor, Somerset

Kitnors Tearooms certainly comes up streets ahead with its setting – it really is idyllic, tucked away perfect as can be in Bossington, a peaceful coastal village within Exmoor’s Holnicote Estate (say  honeycot). The tearooms are set in a big old cottage with warm yellow walls on the outside, a low thatched roof and tall brick chimneys, like most of the cottages at Bossington have. The original bread oven juts out of the wall, climbing roses scramble around the door; inside it’s all cosy and you feel like you’ve been invited into someone’s home rather than stepping into a tea shop, especially in the winter when there’s a crackling fire going.

When the weather’s warmer you can sit out in the garden among the flowers; you’ll have views of the hills of Exmoor rising over the rooftop, fresh air, birds flitting about. It makes you want to linger because you can feel the pace slow down to a wonderfully sedate level, and that’s nice. Most people like to indulge in a cream tea or a slice of homemade cake at Kitnors Tearooms, but they also do light lunchy things like freshly made sandwiches and baguettes. The good news is that everything is either made in the kitchen or locally sourced, which is exactly how it should be.

Kitnors Tearooms are open year round, though not every day so you’d be wise to check their Facebook page if you’re planning to go there, otherwise call in on the offchance if you’re happy to do so.
