Cabot Tower, Bristol, Somerset

Set in the middle of Brandon Hill Park just 10 minutes from Bristol city centre, the Cabot Tower was built in Victorian times to commemorate the 400th anniversary of explorer John Cabot’s voyage to North America and the land that later became known as Canada. His ship Matthew, set sail from Bristol Harbour in 1497 with a local crew, under commission of Henry VII.

Built of red sandstone with cream Bath stone, The Cabot Tower is Grade II listed and is a striking monument, with ornate Gothic Revivial architecture including flying buttresses and an octagonal spirelet. Inside a spiral staircase winds up and around the tower to the viewing platforms at the top; it’s well worth the climb because the vista over the city, the harbourside and beyond is incredible.
