Bishopswood Meadows, Bishopswood, Chard, Somerset

Once the site of a quarry, Bishopswood Meadows are comprised of five limestone and marshy meadows on the slopes of the River Yarty. That’s a good recipe for species rich wildlife, hence the nature reserve status.

The best time of year to go is from April to July when you’ll see cowslips, early purple and common spotted orchids, dwarf thistle and quaking grass on the old spoil heaps and ragged robin and marsh marigolds in the damper areas. It’s also good for butterflies, with Marbled White, Common Blue and Ringlet spotted here. The river is another excellent habitat, with noted species including dippers, dragonflies, otters and kingfishers.

Have a stroll around, respect the tranquility and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Blackdown Hills AONB. Then go down the road to The Candlelight Inn and have a pint of local ale or stay for lunch, the food is good.
